Where do we go from here?

TODAY marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination at Memphis’ Lorraine Motel on April 4, 1968. Today’s event theme is Where do we go from here? All day long, news and media outlets will focus on Dr. King’s life.

Our job is to focus on his legacy.

Our youth group visited Memphis last summer for a mission trip, and experiencing The Heights neighborhood’s challenges and restorative efforts and the incredible exhibits in The Civil Rights Museum were powerful. As a white, middle income woman from Texas, there are many experiences that I simply do not have related to my skin color, culture, gender identification, age, family structure and locale that others do have. That does not minimize my life experiences, but it does MAXIMIZE my responsibility to LISTEN, LOOK AROUND/LEARN, and LOVE FULLY and CREATIVELY as a Christ follower.

Tonight, kids and youth will gather for an Italian dinner at 5:30pm (because, how cool is it that our country is multicultural & we can eat foods from far-off places any time?), and we will split the Younger Kids and the Older Kids for conversations and ACTivities (emphasis on ACTion) related to Where do we go from here? and Dr. King’s legacy. We will gather for age-appropriate conversations as we discuss Dr. King’s efforts for race-related listening and understanding, as well as digging into what Jesus said about justice. There will be some fun moments, too, as we work together on a special activity!
